Where the material ends up
You don’t really see a piece until it is installed. Here are some of the projects ours has gone into.
Around the water
Edge, paving and wall — the part you walk on barefoot, and the part that has to take sun, water and years.
Pool over the valley Terracotta paving and edge, piece by piece
Outside the house
Paving, paths and doorways. What you see before going in — and what wears with the years until it looks like it was always there.
Farmhouse with a flagstone path Split-edge flagstones over pebbles, with terracotta paving on the porch
Inside
Floors, walls and fireplaces. Indoors you see each piece up close every day, and the variation between them is what keeps it from looking like a catalogue floor.
Exposed brick wall Thin brick, course by course
Pieces of the trade
Fountains, tables and benches — made one at a time, and the first thing you see when you reach a garden.
Octagonal fountain Central pillar and eight-sided basin
A one-off commission
The cloister
A complete reproduction of a twelfth-century cloister, built stone by stone without a single mass-produced piece.
It is the largest commission that has come through here. A complete cloister — arches, columns, capitals and paving — reproducing a twelfth-century structure, carved by hand by Anton Cosma, a master stonemason who specialises in stone sculpture.
The capitals are the part you notice most: each one carries its own figures, carved one at a time. There is no mould and no repeated piece, which is why the work is counted in months rather than weeks.
