Nau d'assecatge plena de peces esteses a terra

About us

A family making terracotta since 1889

Four generations in the same place, making the pieces the same way: by hand, one at a time.

Terra Cuita is a family business in El Perelló, in the Terres de l’Ebre. We have been making terracotta since 1889 and we are the fourth generation to work here.

In this trade machinery does not solve everything. You have to know the earth, the clay tells you when it is ready through your hands, and the kiln has its own days. That is why the pieces are still made one at a time in the mould and fired in the wood kiln, the way they have always been fired. It is not nostalgia: it is the only way to get what you are after.

The workshop has grown over the years. Alongside the clay came the socarrats — hand-painted tiles — and the glazes, hand-worked stone and timber. And also the antique pieces and salvaged materials: stone mills, fountains, storage jars and pitchers that we rescue before they are lost, so they find a place in a home again.

How we work

Three things we don’t compromise on

  • By hand, one at a time

No piece comes out like the one before. Thickness, shade and markings all vary, and that is what sets a terracotta floor apart from a mass-produced one.

  • Wood-fired kiln

This is where earth becomes terracotta. The shades that come out of it cannot be programmed — and we wouldn’t want them to be.

  • Materials with a past

We make, but we also rescue. A storage jar or a stone mill that is saved is worth as much as a new piece.

  • Earth, water and fire

There is nothing else in the piece. The clay comes from just next door, it is mixed with water, dried in the sun and fired with wood. A material that comes from the earth and can return to it.

The place

On the N‑340, in El Perelló

The works sit right by the road, among olive trees. There is the mill, the drying sheds, the kilns and the yard where the red and white clays are stacked before they are blended.

Si vols veure el material en persona —i en aquest ofici val molt la pena—, avisa’ns i passa’t.
